Didn't know where to stick this post as it is a wish list product, but could do with thought from everyone.
I remember a few years ago on Tomorrows World (or similar program) someone who had made a shirt out of some kind of optical fibres. The whole shirt was glowing up (not just highlighted areas) so the fibres themselves must have been a pretty small diameter i.e. not glow wire as we know it today.
Anyway, I was wondering... I don't know very much about optical fibres but if you were to experiment with different materials or refractive indexes (indices?) in the cladding of the fibre could you make it produce a visible glow along it's length?
I'm just thinking of the possibilities of having lengths of fibres connected to a sealed box containing a light source such as a gem. Stitch these fibres into a seat and you have one show stopping car.
Anyway, what do you guys reckon? Possibility or just witchcraft :?:

 OOPS

Just noticed it's sort of been discussed in the 'flexi leds' post.

so you are wanting a fibre like structure that glows...

Yes Tom, like a fibre optic cable but instead of showing the light output at the end of the core, having it radiate from the surface area of it. I know fibre optics (as I know them anyway) cannot do this due to their total internal reflection characteristics...But what if the refractive indices of the cladding could be engineered so that light incident upon it would not be reflected or allowed to pass through, but diffused along its length. Maybe it's possible, maybe not, I'm just assuming nobody has tried something similar as it defeats the purpose of what fibre optics are used for?
Just out of interest has anyone else seen that Tommorows World programme with the glow shirt that I mentioned in the initial post?

'Side emittting fibre optics' are what you are talking about - search Google for the phrase and you'll find it's quite common :P

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING!!!
One of these below but instead of a single colour light source use a gem in a similar container, possibly using some kind of diffusion baffle before the cable to ensure proper colour mixing.
Imagine having lengths of this cable round speaker grilles or outlining door cards, basically where you would use standard glow wire. Connected up to one of the zones of the ZEN this would look great all synchronised with the UFO. Glowing one 'background' colour and then producing a pulse of contrasting colour down the cable whenever there is a bass beat!
IS THIS POSSIBLE :?:

Oh no, I've got my "must have" head on now! Depending on costs and potential cable length limitations I'm going to order one of these units. I suppose it would be a simple case of unscrewing the source unit and replacing the bulb with a gem. Drill a hole in the back for the gem cables and Bobs your uncle, networked ICELED glow wire!

the problem is the brightness of the gem may not give enough light for the tube... maybe more than one would be needed and it may need to be focussed onto the point where the tube starts... but i really dont know :D

I've just ordered some cable on its own to do a few experiments with. It should be arriving within a week or so. Will keep you updated. :o

Just a thought with regards to brightness. Instead of having a source & sink end arrangement, why not have light sources at both ends of the cable :?
